Have you ever tried Filipino-style spaghetti?

It’s with a meaty red sauce but with a twist of being on the sweeter side. It comes with a savory, sweet, and just a hint of spice.

Throughout my stay here in the U.S., I have learned how to make the sauce from scratch. But sometimes, busy weeknights call for something quick to serve without compromising the flavor. This cooks at the same time as the pasta does.

I feel lucky to find this instant spaghetti sauce from the Filipino store.

This is your easy guide to cooking Filipino-style spaghetti.

Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 3/4 cup carrots, finely chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter or margarine
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup meat of choice* (see notes below)
  • 1 pack 500g Filipino-style spaghetti sauce
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups water
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a pot or deep pan, heat up the oil and butter. Let the butter fully melt and bubble before starting to saute.
  • Add your onion and carrots and saute until soft. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Add in the meat. Saute until slightly cooked.
  • Add the spaghetti sauce.
  • Pour in half of the water in the spaghetti sauce pouch, shake to get the rest of the sauce from the container and pour it in the pot as well. Set aside the remaining water.
  • Mix and bring to a slow simmer. Put the heat on low and start cooking your spaghetti pasta according to directions.
  • Before serving, check the simmered sauce and add the water sparingly according to your desired consistency.
  • Ladle the sauce on top of your pasta. Top with parmesan cheese.

Notes

  • I recommend cooking the whole packet of sauce. In our case, being a small family, it’s easier to cook the whole thing and set aside half of the sauce for another meal. It can be stored in the refrigerator for 4 days, or you can freeze it for later use.
  • * Meat of choice can be ground pork, chicken or beef, ham, sliced hotdogs, spam, or a combination of these! Feel free to use what you have on hand.

Let me know how it goes. Have a wonderful day!
